We are pleased to offer.. 1920S OIL ON BOARD "JACK PINES" GROUP OF SEVEN, AY JACKSON. It was described only as a landscape painting, signed Alexander, but being artsy Canadians - well versed in the Group of Seven - we suspected it was more than described. Upon purchasing the painting, confirmed to be from the 1920s era, we further researched the signature which was written in pencil on the lower back of the painting.

We matched the signature to a letter stored in the archives at the McMichael Art Gallery, well known for their Group of Seven collections. Particularly, the "Alex" in "Alexander" has a very distinct style to the A, and the x which hangs down.

More than just a coincidence which you add to the fact that it's the right era, right style, right board, and right frame. Now, a historical find, what dreams are made of. Ie: if the painting was ever stolen, they could show their name was written on the back and it belonged to them.

That being said, is the painting an A Y Jackson? Some argue that it looks more like an Arthur Lismer. Maybe gifted to A Y Jackson and part of his personal collection at one point.

We removed the century old iron nails from the back of the frame to examine the medium. It is a very thin board that has been mounted to cardboard. There may be writing on the back, however, we do not want to remove it from the cardboard, some things are better left untouched. If you're looking for a rare painting fresh to the market, here's a great opportunity to add a truly historic painting from a defining era.
